092 Try 3 (further) recipes in every cookery book I own

Cookery Books

Why do I want to do this?

I'm a bit of a magpie when it comes to cookery books - well, books in general, but cookbooks in particular. I have a suspicion that I possess rather more than I need, and that some of those I possess are actually not very good. This is a way to weed out the dud ones.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll be sticking a sticker to the cover of the appropriate book each time I try a new recipe, so when they've all got three stickers, it'll be done.

I'll record this at [personal profile] stapsreads.

079 Watch 10 pre-1960 and 10 post-1960 films I've not seen before

DVD shelf

Why do I want to do this?

I have seen shockingly few films. I wish to remedy this.

How will I know I've done this?

Listed below will be twenty films, ten of which were first released after 1960, and ten of which were released before or during 1960. Each of these I will have watched for the first time over the course of the 1001 days.

I'll record this in this journal and at [personal profile] stapsreads.

Pre-1960: Shanghai Express / The Blue Angel / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10
1960-date: Toy Story 3 / My Big Fat Greek Wedding / Galaxy Quest / The Way / The Bucket List / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10

069 Cook two different recipes for each herb in my garden

Herb Garden

Why do I want to do this?

As part of my last list, I planted a fantastic herb garden. It's got all sorts in it: chives, rosemary, sage, hyssop, chervil, sorrel, thyme, parsley, mint, lemon verbena, lemon balm, tarragon... I'd like to use it a bit more. Even when it's dark and raining.

How will I know I've done it?

When any herb in my garden is named, I'll be able to name two dishes I've cooked that include that herb.

I'll record this in posts in this journal. Might share some of the recipes, if they work well.

061 Eat at a restaurant 6 times, 2 times being at new-to-me restaurants

Tony at Pizza Express

Why do I want to do this?

I like food. I much prefer eating decent food to eating boring food when I have the chance, and not having to a) think about it; and b) cook it; is something I very much enjoy.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll have eaten six meals (of at least two courses each) at restaurants. Two of these meals will have been eaten at restaurants I've not visited before.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

[One - Charlie Choy's (new to me)] [Two - Jamie's Italian - new to me] [Three - Rumwong - new to me] [Four - Pizza Express] [Five - Da Mario's - new to me] [Six - Shabab Pavilion - new to me] [bonus Seven - Safran - new to me]

041 Go to another country I've never visited

Visited Countries

Visited Countries Map from TravelBlog

Why do I want to do this?

I like exploring new places.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have spent a period of at least seven hours in a country in which I've never previously spent a significant length of time. (Changing trains in Bruxelles-Midi, or flying into Geneva airport to be driven to Annecy, in the French Alps, does not count as a significant length of time, so both Belgium and Switzerland are still open.)

I'll record this in a post in this journal.

015 Seek and follow up on recommendations for various items every day for a month

Walk, Wink

Why do I want to do this?

I'm reasonably adventurous, but, given a limited budget and a near infinite choice, don't usually know where to start. That's a very open statement, and it's meant to be. It applies to food, to music, to books, to pretty much everything. I'll often find myself falling back on the angel I know because the sheer breadth of choice. I fear I may be missing out.

How will I know when I've done it?

Every day for a month, I'll have posted asking for recommendations for various items. I'll have followed up any resulting recommendations to the best of my ability.

014 Investigate my parish church, the Friends' Meeting, and one other Woking congregation

Saint Mary of Bethany

What's this about? Why do I want to do it?

I moved to Woking a year ago, but I'm still commuting to church in Guildford, where I previously lived. That's not likely to change soon, as I'm in the choir and on the PCC at Guildford, but I'd also like to get more involved in my local community. In my experience, finding a local place of worship is a good way to start. The two denominations I have the closest links with are the Church of England and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Since I might not get on with either of the local groups in those denominations, I'll try one more.

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have attended a service at St Mary of Bethany Church, a Meeting for Worship with Woking Friends and one other religious service in the Woking area.

This can't be combined with goal 1 (become a Mystery Worshipper and review three services) for the simple reason that, if I decided to attend one of these on even a semi-regular basis, I would feel very uncomfortable posting such a public review.

I'll record this in posts on this journal.

012 Read books by 26 authors I've not read before, one for each letter of the alphabet

Bookshelf

Why do I want to do this?

I read a lot, but I do tend to stick to tried and true authors. I'm hoping that this will prompt me to be a bit more adventurous.

How will I know when it's done?

For every letter of the alphabet I will have read a book by an author with whose work I was previously unacquainted.

Progress can be tracked at [personal profile] stapsreads, though I'll also post links to the book reviews below.
