Why do I want to do this?

I've never been keen on the idea that 'Christmas = spend loadsa money!!!'. I have more sympathy for the one that goes 'Christmas = spend time and trouble on people you love'. That's what this is about. It's also a variation on 'Recycled Christmas', which was a goal on the old list. Besides, I like making things.

How will I know I've done it?

For Christmas 2010, 2011 and 2012, three of the presents I give will have been made by myself. These can be edible, wearable, practical, frivolous, or whatever.

I'll record this in posts in this journal - after Christmas.

Herb Garden

Why do I want to do this?

As part of my last list, I planted a fantastic herb garden. It's got all sorts in it: chives, rosemary, sage, hyssop, chervil, sorrel, thyme, parsley, mint, lemon verbena, lemon balm, tarragon... I'd like to use it a bit more. Even when it's dark and raining.

How will I know I've done it?

When any herb in my garden is named, I'll be able to name two dishes I've cooked that include that herb.

I'll record this in posts in this journal. Might share some of the recipes, if they work well.

Why do I want to do this?

I'm a reasonably regular blood donor; I just want to keep the habit going. You wouldn't believe how much trouble I had with the wording of this goal. On the last list I had 'Give blood five times'. Fine. Except at least three of the times I went to a donation session I wasn't able to give blood, for various health-related reasons - and so I missed it.

Then I thought, well, why not aim for whatever the next level is in the award scheme. The trouble with that idea is that I've already got the blue card, and have been at least twice since then - so getting the bronze award would entail very little effort. I can't attempt silver, though, because one can only give blood three times a year. I think I've got the wording about right now. We shall see.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have turned up at seven blood donation sessions, and have made every effort to give blood.

I'll record this in this post, and potentially in other posts in this journal.

What's this about?

Offa's Dyke is an 8th century earthwork that runs most of the length of the Welsh-English border; these days there's a long-distance footpath that follows it. Alternatively, I could walk from one side of England to the other.

Why do I want to do this?

I'd like to do a long-distance walk that's not a pilgrimage. I want to be able to say that I've walked from one side of a country to another. (I didn't do this on the Camino de Santiago, as I stopped in Santiago de Compostela and didn't continue to Finisterre.)

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have traversed, on foot, either the length of Offa's Dyke from the Severn to Prestatyn (or vice versa), or from one coast of England to the opposite.

I'll record this in this journal, though you probably won't hear much from me while it's actually in progress.

Why do I want to do this?

I had 'swim 50 lengths without having to stop to wheeze' on my last list. I completed it, and haven't been to the pool since. Which is silly: I like swimming, despite what it occasionally does to my chest; it's just the getting round to it. I'm hoping that this distance will take me a bit longer to work up to, and get me swimming more regularly.

How will I know when it's done?

I'll have swum 500 lengths in one session. The pool I have in mind is 25m long; if I somehow manage to complete this goal at a 50m long pool that's just a bonus.

I'll record this in this journal, and on my Daytum page, if I can work out how to use it.
