What's this about?

[livejournal.com profile] 100_snapshots is a photography challenge in which the participant is given 100 prompt words and takes a photograph for each of them. There is no time limit.

Why do I want to do this?

I'm trying to improve my photography, and this is another angle from which to approach it. I've already got goals on this list that will improve my more spontaneous pictures, but this one involves deliberately setting out to take photos of specific subjects.

How will I know I've done this?

Each of the words below will be a link to the photograph that illustrates it.

I'll record this using the list below, on Flickr, and possibly on the official LJ community.

Why do I want to do this?

I have this perception of myself as clumsy and lacking in hand-eye coordination. I'm not sure to what extent this is grounded in reality, but I'd like to challenge myself. If Tolstoy could learn to ride a bike at 67, there's time for me to learn to juggle.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll be able to juggle three balls continuously for at least a minute.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Bow Tie

Why do I want to do this?

This seems to me to be one of those useful adult skills that nobody ever bothers to teach you, on a level with being able to shuffle cards with the minimum of fuss and bother. One of these days I may find myself terribly embarrassed upon being exposed as someone who can't tie a bow tie. (NB: a bow tie does not form part of my everyday attire, but I still think I should be able to do it.)

How will I know I've done it?

I'll be able to put a standard (i.e. not velcro, hook-and-eye or clip-on) bow tie on myself or another person, and make it look reasonable.

I'll record this in a post in this journal.

Guitar, Rainbow

Why do I want to do this?

This is a variant on a goal from the last list: learn to play the harmonica. I had very worthy reasons for this - to be able to accompany others at community sing-songs, carol singing, bus camps, or whatever. This proved impractical on two counts. Firstly, it was too vague. I could always pick out a tune on the mouth organ, albeit somewhat haltingly, so I hadn't really set myself a challenge. Secondly, I never got a chance to act on these good intentions because, as someone who could both carry a tune and remember all the words to all the verses to pretty much all the songs anybody ever wanted to sing, I was much more in demand as a singer.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll be sufficiently proficient on the guitar to be able to accompany myself singing the entirety of one song. It doesn't matter what the song is.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Cello, Rainbow

Why do I want to do this?

I'm never going to be the next Jacqueline du Pré, but I do enjoy playing my cello. The trouble is, now I'm not in any sort of orchestra, I don't make time to do it.

How will I know I've done this?

Every month for the duration of the 1001 days, I'll have spent an hour playing my cello.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

- 30 November 2010 - an hour on Classics For Idiots and a few scales. Mostly The Swan.

Paris At His Feet

What's this about?

Skipping. With a rope, if you were wondering. Nothing so challenging as the picture, but it should train me to be a bit more nimble with my feet.

Why do I want to do this?

When I was a young'un I used to be quite good at skipping (once impressed my trampoline instructor mightily by skipping backwards on the trampoline), but there were a few tricks I never mastered.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll have managed an unbroken run of 500 steps, turning the skipping rope forwards. I'll also have managed an unbroken run of 100 steps, turning the rope backwards. I'll also have managed an unbroken run of ten steps, crossing the rope in front of me.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

I have a sort of on/off relationship with cryptic crosswords. Every few months I'll pick one up, work out a couple of clues, feel smug, and put it down again. I've never finished one.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll have completed a cryptic crossword correctly, without looking at the answers.

I'll record this in this journal.

Published

Why do I want to do this?

Firstly, I want to nag myself into producing something of publishable quality. Secondly, I want to work up the confidence to submit it.

How will I know I've done it?

A work produced largely or exclusively by myself will have appeared in a publication over which I have no editorial control. This can be text, photographic or in another form, and the publication can be online or can take physical form.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

I don't get much practice at taking photos of people, usually because I'm too shy to ask them to sit down for me. I'm hoping that this will improve both the photography and the shyness.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have taken five posed or deliberate photographs of other people, with which I'm reasonably happy. I will have proved that I'm happy with them by having prints made and giving copies to the subject, unless it would for some reason be inappropriate for me to do this. (I can't think of any reason, but I feel I need a get-out clause on this one.)

I'll record this on this journal and at Flickr.

What's this about?

These Three Remain was my 2007 NaNoWriMo effort, and was partly a response to the Great Christian Union Cockup of 2005-7, and partly an expression of frustration with Dear Bob. There are various drafts extant, in various states of completion.

Why do I want to do this?

I think that, given a little more hard work, this could be the best thing I've ever written. I don't want it to languish unfinished on my hard drive forever.

How will I know when it's done?

I'll have a complete novel that I wouldn't be ashamed to submit to a publisher. You never know, I might even submit it to a publisher.

Progress will be tracked in occasional posts in this journal, letting you know how I'm getting on with it.

What's this about?

Phyl Merrick is a character who's been in my head since I was about thirteen; every now and again she pops up, usually to explore a path I didn't take myself, to see what would have happened if I'd done x, y or z differently. Consequently, she stopped being me quite a while ago. There are various storylines she fits into - "The Slowest Elopement" involves a journey north in a very slow bus.

Why do I want to do this?

This is a character that's been in my head for about half my lifetime. It's about time she got into a proper book.

How will I know when it's done?

I'll have something that resemebles a story with a plot.

Progress can be tracked... oh, wait, it can't. I'm afraid you'll have to trust me on this one, because I'm not proposing to cast my first drafts all over the internet.

What's this about?

Project 365 is a pretty simple concept: you take a photograph every day for a year.

Why do I want to do this?

Something my mum says: you only get good at something by doing it. Oh, you can study something, you can read around it, but you'll only really start to improve when you try it for yourself. It's difficult to learn from other people's mistakes, and you can only prove that you have when you risk making your own. I'd like to be a better photographer.

This is the only goal on my list that runs for more than a month's worth of consecutive days. This is because I will always be able to take a photograph, and it can take me as little as what? five seconds?

How will I know when it's done?

I will have taken 365 photographs on 365 consecutive days.

Progress can be followed at my Flickr page.
