I'll Be Seeing You

Why do I want to do this?

I used to be completely and utterly stage-struck, and to this day there's something about the swish of a red velvet curtain that makes me happy. I don't go to the theatre nearly as often as I'd like, and this is because I'm never organised enough to find out what's on and get myself a ticket. This is frankly ridiculous, with the Ambassadors (or is it the New Victoria?) on my doorstep and London just up the railway line.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll be able to produce ticket stubs or programmes for the following:

- one grand opera (as distinct from light opera, below - this doesn't have to be restricted to nineteenth-century spectaculars, but it does have to be at least vaguely serious);
- one light opera or operetta (this can be one of the Savoy operas, though if this is the case it must absolutely be a professional production; I've seen plenty of amateur G & S, so it wouldn't be a new experience);
- one musical (can be anything)
- one ballet (can be anything)
- three Shakespeare plays (not to include Romeo and Juliet, if I can help it)
- one play not (so far as is known) written by Shakespeare (but can be anything else)

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

Museums are fantastic - I love wandering around, looking at beautiful things, interesting things, important things, things that meant something. I don't go to as many as I'd like, and when I do go I tend to stick to ones I already know.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have spent at least an hour in each of six different museums. I will have previously visited three of these, but the other three will be new to me.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

Because I think it will look fantastic, and I spent far too many years of my life trying to grow my hair.

How will I know I've done it?

My hair will be shorter than it's ever been in my life. I won't be able to tuck it behind my ears.

I'll record this in a post in this journal. Yes, there will be photos.

What's this about?

TED is a fantastic thing. Interested people talking about interesting things, things they love. Many, many fascinating talks to watch online.

Why do I want to do this?

Because it's dead interesting, and I'll never do it otherwise.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have watched 101 TED videos from beginning to end.

I'll record this in posts in this journal. Click on the numbers below to see talks I've watched.

TARDIS: DVD set

Why do I want to do this?

Other 101ers have much more ambitious TV-related goals than this. Watch the entirety of Buffy. All the Doctor Who episodes that weren't actually destroyed by the BBC. And so on. Why am I aiming so low? Because I actually wouldn't do this if I didn't have this prod. Perhaps it's something to do with growing up without a TV, but I can count on the fingers of one hand the programmes of which I've seen an entire season. I don't think I've ever seen a whole season at the time of broadcast (I should note that this doesn't form part of this goal).

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have watched every episode of one complete season of any TV series.

I'll record this in this journal, probably.

Hey Diddle Diddl

What's this about?

The Proms. The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC - 'the world's greatest classical music festival'. So much music! Thirty sounds ambitious, but that's only an average of ten per year, and there are about one hundred every year. It's all on the wireless and the TV; besides, I can easily get up to London to see the Real Thing.

Why do I want to do it?

Free music, people! I know shockingly little music, and all I need is a little kick to listen to it.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have heard thirty Prom concerts from beginning to end.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Writing case

Why do I want to do this?

I love receiving letters, and there's a certain degree of reciprocity involved in this exercise. If I don't send, I'm unlikely to receive. Anyway, I do enjoy writing letters, once I get round to it.

How will I know when I've done this?

I'll have written in longhand, and posted, 30 letters to friends and family. This won't include letters written primarily to thank people for Christmas or birthday presents.

I'll record this in this post, and possibly other posts in this journal.

What's this about?

The Omnivore's 100 is a list of foods that the blog owner thinks every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food – but a good omnivore should really try it all.

Why do I want to do this?

My worst enemy couldn't call me a picky eater - I will try pretty much anything if it's put in front of me. I won't, however, go out of my way to eat it. This is designed to push me a little bit further, to be a little more adventurous.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have eaten ten items in the list below that I hadn't previously tried.

I'll track this below:

Jazz

Why do I want to do this?

I love jazz, but I hardly ever get up and go to a jazz night off my own bat. This goal is meant to be a little kick in the right direction.

How will I know when I've done it?

I will have gone to a jazz night, gig, concert, whatever, not because that's what a friend's birthday party happened to involve, nor because someone I knew was in it, but because I wanted to.

I'll record this in a post here.

Coloured Chalk Cliff

Why do I want to do this?

I use 'swim' in its loosest sense here. Flapping around a bit and floating is also perfectly acceptable, as this isn't about physical fitness, it's about what sea-bathing does to my mind. The first sharp chill of the water having receded, I love the feeling of buoyancy, of calm, of not having to be in control. (Up to a point, obviously. I have no intention of drowning.)

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have immersed myself in the sea at least once in 2011, at least once in 2012, and at least once in 2013. (I swam in the sea in July 2010, and I'm not going in again in December.)

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Scottish Lion: Edinburgh Picturehouse

Why do I want to do this?

I'm a real sucker for gigantic screens and plush seats. I never seem to get around to actually deciding to watch a film and going out to see it. The last thing I saw at the cinema was Quantum of Solace. Trust me, five films in two and three quarter years will be a challenge.

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have watched five films at a public screening.

I'll record this in reviews which I'll link here.
