Chair (Restoration in Progress)

What's this about? Why do I want to do it?

My mother bought me this chair from the junk stall at Woking market for a couple of quid. I was going to leave it painted white, but she started stripping the paint. Having carried on with that, I can see her point - it's lovely wood underneath. (Beech, I think, but I'm not sure.) Anyhow, now it's started it needs finishing, because it looks a bit silly as it is.

How will I know I've done this?

The chair will be stripped down to bare wood, and finished with beeswax or similar. (There seem to be two layers of white paint, one of horrible blue, probably lead, paint, and one of some sort of varnish.)

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

I'm notoriously disorganised, and with both Marks and Spencers and Tesco within spitting distance of my place of work, I find it difficult to keep up good lunch habits for more than a few days at a time. I'm hoping to change this.

How will I know I've done this?

Every working day for one whole calendar month, which will not include more than three days of annual leave and/or sick leave, I will have taken to work and eaten a lunch that I have prepared myself.

I'll record this in posts in this journal. (I'll try to make it interesting.)

Why do I want to do this?

If my wardrobe contains one example of each of these garments, I will be prepared for pretty much any given formal occasion.

How will I know I've done it?

By looking in the wardrobe ;-)

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Mackintosh watch

What's this about?

This watch was a Christmas present from my ma a few years ago, and it's stopped. I'm not sure what's wrong with it - originally I thought it was running out of battery, but when I took it to a repair place to change the battery they tested it and it was fine.

Why do I want to do this?

Well, a stopped watch is only right twice a day. It could do with having a link taken out, too; it slips around a bit.

How will I know I've done it?

My watch will keep good time, and will fit better than it does at present.

I'll record this in a post in this journal.

Waffle Iron

Why do I want to do this?

There's no point in owning things you don't use - particularly things that aren't nice to have in and of themselves. I'm hoping that, by making a conscious decision to use all the white, grey, black and stainless steel goods, I'll be able to consider whether or not I actually want to keep them around, and, if I do, to use them more.

How will I know I've done this?

Every item on the list below (which is to be added to as and when I think of more things) will have the name of a dish next to it - a dish I've cooked using it.

waffle iron
slow cooker - Goulash Soup with Dumplings
toaster
sandwich toaster
coffee filter machine
deep fat fryer
Magimix
stick blender - celery soup
microwave
kettle
bread maker
garlic crusher
skewers
pie-crust holder-upper
steak pan

I'll record this at this post and in other posts in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

I accumulate an awful lot of Stuff. Some of it's good stuff. Some of it's stuff that, on balance, I'd really rather not have around, but which I can't get rid of because it has personal information that I'd rather the binmen/identity fraudsters/the recycling people didn't read.

How will I know I've done this?

There'll be a shredder in my study. There isn't one at the moment, so I'll be able to tell the difference ;-)

I'll record this in a post in this journal.

Why do I want to do this?

I don't tend to spend a lot on underwear, mainly on the grounds that nobody's going to see it. However, given the way that e.g. an itchy bra strap can drive me to extreme irritation, there's quite a lot to be said for having well-fitting garments in natural fibres (important, this - you really don't want to know what synthetics do to me) next the skin.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have the following in my possession:

- bras, everyday, non-wired, 2 (one black, one white/camel)
- bras, everyday, wired, 2 (one black, one white/camel)
- bras, posh, 3 (one black, one white, one exciting colour)
- at least three pairs of pants to go with each bra
- slips, camisoles, etc, according to my whim.

All will be at least 95% natural fibre, and all will fit me properly.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Farewell to wine

Why do I want to do this?

The photograph is slightly misleading. The reason I've got a half bottle of wine lying around to photograph is... that I don't actually drink much. I hardly ever drink at home. I do drink socially, though, and I'm curious to see how I'll cope in social situations without that crutch.

How will I know I've done it?

Simple: no alcohol (bar communion wine) for one whole calendar month.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Solicitors

What's the picture got to do with this?

This goal was originally going to be 'Make will'. However, having gone with my mother when she updated her will, I realised that it's a bit pointless because I have a) no property to speak of; and b) no dependents. I decided to concentrate on something that's going to be of more immediate use.

Why do I want to do this?

I'm sick of having to hunt through a pile of credit card bills, magazines, postcards, and goodness knows what else every time I want to pay the council tax. Or whatever. In short, my study is a mess.

How will I know I've done it?

The big box in the corner of my room will be empty, its contents either filed or disposed of.

I'll record this in a post in this journal. I'll try to keep it to one post; it's hardly the most fascinating item on this list.
