Why do I want to do this?

I could do with sharpening up my vocal technique. I think - hope - it will build my confidence, too.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have spent at least one hour with a self-described singing teacher, concentrating on improving my singing voice.

I'll record this in a post in this journal.

Paris At His Feet

What's this about?

Skipping. With a rope, if you were wondering. Nothing so challenging as the picture, but it should train me to be a bit more nimble with my feet.

Why do I want to do this?

When I was a young'un I used to be quite good at skipping (once impressed my trampoline instructor mightily by skipping backwards on the trampoline), but there were a few tricks I never mastered.

How will I know I've done this?

I'll have managed an unbroken run of 500 steps, turning the skipping rope forwards. I'll also have managed an unbroken run of 100 steps, turning the rope backwards. I'll also have managed an unbroken run of ten steps, crossing the rope in front of me.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Apostles' Creed

What's this about?

Back on my last list, I had the following goal: Articulate my opinions re. Apostles’, Nicene and Athanasian creeds, Thirty-Nine Articles [pdf] and UCCF Doctrinal Basis. I got about five clauses into the Apostles' Creed. This goal is to complete the work I began there.

Why do I want to do this?

The creeds, we're told, summarise what I'm supposed to believe as a Christian. The Thirty-Nine Articles add to this, marking out what makes the Church of England distinctive, though unless I get ordained or similar I probably won't be asked to put my name to them. However, had I ever made it onto the committee of the Christian Union (you laugh, but it might have happened, had Symphony Orchestra not rehearsed on Tuesday nights), I would have been asked to sign the [Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship] Doctrinal Basis. I want to explore just how comfortable I am with all these things I'm meant to believe.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have articulated my interpretation of and feelings about each clause of the five summaries of belief.

This can be tracked by following the credo tag at [personal profile] el_staplador.

Why do I want to do this?

Another of those things I feel I ought to be able to do, and can't. Currently I can do the Great Bear/Saucepan/Charles' Wain/what have you, Cassiopeia, and Orion. It's a bit pathetic, really, when all it takes is a bit of looking.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll be able to point out fifteen (twelve, plus the three I already know) separate constellations in the night sky without having to refer to a plan, guide, or other aid.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

The Curse of the Mummy

What's this about?

A murder mystery dinner: it's like a dinner party combined with a parlour game, with certain props and storylines pre-prepared.

Why do I want to do this?

This is a stupid thing I've got really het up about for no good reason. Should I invite the people I went to the last murder mystery dinner with? Should I invite the people who've expressed in interest in going to one? Who is on speaking terms with whom? This goal is designed to make me do the damn thing, whoever comes or doesn't come.

How will I know I've done it?

People will have come to dinner and solved a mystery. Either the one in the picture or another one. I could even write one myself.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.
stapsdoes101things: '101' superimposed on a stylised picture of a teapot (Default)
Solicitors

What's the picture got to do with this?

This goal was originally going to be 'Make will'. However, having gone with my mother when she updated her will, I realised that it's a bit pointless because I have a) no property to speak of; and b) no dependents. I decided to concentrate on something that's going to be of more immediate use.

Why do I want to do this?

I'm sick of having to hunt through a pile of credit card bills, magazines, postcards, and goodness knows what else every time I want to pay the council tax. Or whatever. In short, my study is a mess.

How will I know I've done it?

The big box in the corner of my room will be empty, its contents either filed or disposed of.

I'll record this in a post in this journal. I'll try to keep it to one post; it's hardly the most fascinating item on this list.
stapsdoes101things: '101' superimposed on a stylised picture of a teapot (Default)
Published

Why do I want to do this?

Firstly, I want to nag myself into producing something of publishable quality. Secondly, I want to work up the confidence to submit it.

How will I know I've done it?

A work produced largely or exclusively by myself will have appeared in a publication over which I have no editorial control. This can be text, photographic or in another form, and the publication can be online or can take physical form.

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Writing case

Why do I want to do this?

I love receiving letters, and there's a certain degree of reciprocity involved in this exercise. If I don't send, I'm unlikely to receive. Anyway, I do enjoy writing letters, once I get round to it.

How will I know when I've done this?

I'll have written in longhand, and posted, 30 letters to friends and family. This won't include letters written primarily to thank people for Christmas or birthday presents.

I'll record this in this post, and possibly other posts in this journal.

Wedding Lace

What's this about? Why do I want to do it?

My home is crawling with invitations, orders of service, scraps of fabric and goodness knows what else, and what that means is that, when I come across any of the aforementioned souvenirs, my reaction is not, 'Oh, Clarissa's wedding, what a lovely day that was,' but, 'Oh, no, I really need to sort this lot out'. If I'm going to have these things around at all, I want to enjoy them, not feel disproportionately guilty about them.

How will I know when it's done?

I will have an album that contains photographs of and souvenirs from the ?six weddings I've been to in the last five years, not counting my own. (Anything before that is, I fear, going to be impractical.) I will be able to throw away any further souvenirs I come across.

I'll record this in [illustrated] posts in this journal.

Robin

Why do I want to do this?

I don't get much practice at taking photos of people, usually because I'm too shy to ask them to sit down for me. I'm hoping that this will improve both the photography and the shyness.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have taken five posed or deliberate photographs of other people, with which I'm reasonably happy. I will have proved that I'm happy with them by having prints made and giving copies to the subject, unless it would for some reason be inappropriate for me to do this. (I can't think of any reason, but I feel I need a get-out clause on this one.)

I'll record this on this journal and at Flickr.

Empty frame

Why do I want to do this?

My photography has been getting better and better, but I'm still underconfident about it. I'm also not very organised when it comes to getting prints made. The combination makes this goal more of a challenge than you'd think. I believe that even now I could take a photograph that I'd be happy to display in its own right as a work of art, and this goal is meant to give me a little kick into doing so.

How will I know I've done it?

Somewhere around my house I will have, framed, and in plain sight of any visitors, a photograph that I have taken myself. It will be on display not because of the subject per se, but because I believe that it's a decent picture.

I'll record this by taking a photo of the photo, and posting it here.

Music Theory

What's this about?

Music theory is the study of how music works. It examines the language and notation of music. It seeks to identify patterns and structures in composers' techniques, across or within genres, styles, or historical periods. In a grand sense, music theory distills and analyzes the fundamental parameters or elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, texture, etc. (Wikipedia.

Developing literacy with the tonal language forms a key part of a rounded education for performers, composers and listeners of all kinds. An understanding of how written symbols relate to the elements of music, and having the skills to interpret and translate them into sounds, empowers us to communicate and experience music in a meaningful way. Without knowledge of notation it is impossible for classical musicians to access their repertoire with ease or to rehearse together; and this repertoire could not be heard at all had composers not been able to write it down. So, music theory is a very practical subject that is completely entwined with performance and composition. (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music - .pdf)

Why do I want to do this?

I love music, but I'm very conscious that I don't really know much about how it works. Oh, I can read it, I can play it, I can sing it, but I don't really understand chords, intervals, majors and minors. I think that knowing this sort of stuff will make me a better musician.

I'm going for Grade V because... it's kind of traditional. In the words of the ABRSM, again, A longstanding ABRSM benchmark is that a pass at Grade 5 or above in Theory of Music must be obtained before candidates can enter for Grades 6, 7 or 8 Practical exams. We believe that a thorough understanding of the elements of music is essential for a full and satisfying performance at these higher grades.

How will I know I've done this?

I will be able to sit and pass a Grade V Theory of Music paper. (I may or may not take this examination officially, but I ought to be able to get hold of a paper and a marking scheme, and my husband will be able to mark my efforts.)

I'll record this in posts on this journal.

This goal may be modified or replaced if I find Grade V stupidly easy - in which case I'll probably move up a few grades.

Jazz

Why do I want to do this?

I love jazz, but I hardly ever get up and go to a jazz night off my own bat. This goal is meant to be a little kick in the right direction.

How will I know when I've done it?

I will have gone to a jazz night, gig, concert, whatever, not because that's what a friend's birthday party happened to involve, nor because someone I knew was in it, but because I wanted to.

I'll record this in a post here.
stapsdoes101things: '101' superimposed on a stylised picture of a teapot (Default)
Coloured Chalk Cliff

Why do I want to do this?

I use 'swim' in its loosest sense here. Flapping around a bit and floating is also perfectly acceptable, as this isn't about physical fitness, it's about what sea-bathing does to my mind. The first sharp chill of the water having receded, I love the feeling of buoyancy, of calm, of not having to be in control. (Up to a point, obviously. I have no intention of drowning.)

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have immersed myself in the sea at least once in 2011, at least once in 2012, and at least once in 2013. (I swam in the sea in July 2010, and I'm not going in again in December.)

I'll record this in posts in this journal.

Boots On The Doorstep

What's this about?

Offa's Dyke is an 8th century earthwork that runs most of the length of the Welsh-English border; these days there's a long-distance footpath that follows it. Alternatively, I could walk from one side of England to the other.

Why do I want to do this?

I'd like to do a long-distance walk that's not a pilgrimage. I want to be able to say that I've walked from one side of a country to another. (I didn't do this on the Camino de Santiago, as I stopped in Santiago de Compostela and didn't continue to Finisterre.)

How will I know when I've done it?

I'll have traversed, on foot, either the length of Offa's Dyke from the Severn to Prestatyn (or vice versa), or from one coast of England to the opposite.

I'll record this in this journal, though you probably won't hear much from me while it's actually in progress.

Sunset Over English Channel

What's this about?

Meteorology, says Wikipedia, is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and short term forecasting (in contrast with climatology). Studies in the field stretch back millennia, though significant progress in meteorology did not occur until the eighteenth century. The nineteenth century saw breakthroughs occur after observing networks developed across several countries. Breakthroughs in weather forecasting were achieved in the latter half of the twentieth century, after the development of the computer.

Meteorological phenomena are observable weather events which illuminate and are explained by the science of meteorology. Those events are bound by the variables that exist in Earth's atmosphere: They are temperature, air pressure, water vapor, and the gradients and interactions of each variable, and how they change in time.

I'd just like to be able to understand a weather map.

Why do I want to do this?

It seems like fairly basic knowledge that I don't understand at all. So.

How will I know when I've done it?

Good question. This is probably my vaguest goal. I will call it done when I can look at a pressure map and explain what the wiggly lines [are likely to] mean for the weather.

I'll record this in occasional posts in this journal.

Nails

What's this about?

Looking around other people's lists, one sees a lot of things like 'Collect 50 postcards'. For goodness sake, on my own I've got 'Seek and follow up on recommendations'. They've got to come from somewhere. And then 101 Of A Wolf is trying to distribute a huge number of 'business' cards promoting her 101, and people have been helping out with that. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about.

Why do I want to do this?

A lot of my goals are very much my own, not really comparable to anything other people are doing, and I'd like my 101 in 1001 to be a bit more of an outward-looking thing.

How will I know I've done it?

I'll have done three things to help specific 101ers reach a specific one of their goals.

I'll record this in this journal.

Cow, Calf

Why do I want to do this?

Two words: food miles. This will take a bit of lateral thinking, but I ought to be able to do it.

How will I know I've done it?

For a period of seven days, I'll have eaten nothing that was not produced on the British Isles.

I'll record this in a post, or a number of posts, in this journal.

Local Produce: Grey Squirrel and Rose

Why do I want to do this?

Two words: food miles. I couldn't manage even one meal of food I'd grown myself, but I'm pretty sure I could do a day of local produce.

How will I know it's done?

For 24 consecutive hours, I will have eaten only food from Surrey or adjacent counties.

I'll record this in a post on this journal.

Racer

Why do I want to do this?

Despite appearances, I'm a bit of a petrolhead. My two great loves (in the world of motoring, at least) are things that go very fast, and things that are positively ancient but are still doing their job. I don't have any particular desire to drive them, but being near them brings a lump to my throat.

How will I know when it's done?

I'll have spent at least five hours at a motoring event. I will leave the definition of 'high status' to my own judgement; it's only in there so that I don't go to the King Alfred Running Day (which I attend pretty much every year) and call it done.

I'll record this in a post on here.
